I’ve sometimes described this song as an ode to Mitch McConnell, particularly the combination of his machinations and his toadying to Trump during 45’s presidency. The verses make me think of the country minimalism of Waylon Jennings in the 1970s, but the choruses have a punk edge (and make me think a bit of Dead Kennedys). Many internal jokes within the band and between Beth and me have been cracked about the line “And I bought a pack of eight”—eight what??? (I think both of beer, which doesn’t usually come in packs of 8—4, 6, and 12 are much more common—and of abdominal muscles, as in the proverbial “8-pack.”)
