We started performing "Born in the U.S.A." in 2013 at Johnny's suggestion. In December of that year, a production company kindly asked us to perform a couple of "patriotic songs" for a corporate event, which ended up not working out. But in planning for the possible performance, I produced a slow, lilting, and melancholic version of "Born in the U.S.A." (really, an adaptation of its lyrics) which clearly conveyed the song's words and thereby revealed how critical they are of the US, the Vietnam War, and industrial employers—exactly what the noisy, barked-out original version does not do, which made it more easily appropriated by Reagan and the right, as it famously was. (Springsteen has done other versions of it in which you can hear the words much more clearly.)

There's something meaningful in a person of color singing the words "I was born in the U.S.A." I want close-minded people in my country to know that I and other people of color are just as American as they are.
